Presidential & American Icons
The Presidential and American Icons collection represents the foremost private assemblage of presidential memorabilia and nationally significant artifacts ever gathered by a single dealer. Over a half century of building great collections for great collectors and museums, Gary Hendershott has handled Gilbert Stuart's Athenaeum portrait of George Washington, a wine cooler from the first White House, portraits by Charles Wilson Peale and his son Rembrandt Peale, Abraham Lincoln's White House china and crystal service, and works by Emanuel Leutze — the painter of Washington Crossing the Delaware.
Beyond the presidency, this collection extends to artifacts of broader American significance: Tecumseh's war club with its Brock provenance documentation, multiple Gatling guns spanning the 1871 through 1883 models, Edward Henry Potthast's impressionist beach scenes, Paul Sormani's monumental gilt furniture from 1860s Paris, and Dennis Malone Carter's 1865 Lincoln paintings. Gary's eye for historically resonant objects has placed him at the center of American art and material culture for decades.
While many of these landmark pieces have been placed with leading institutions and discerning private collectors worldwide, their documentation and significance are preserved here as a record of what is possible at the highest level of American historical collecting.
Gilbert Stuart's Athenaeum Portrait of Washington
The iconic unfinished portrait by Gilbert Stuart that became the basis for Washington's image on the one-dollar bill. This is among the most recognized and important American paintings ever created, and Gary handled one of the finest examples to survive from Stuart's studio.
George Washington Wine Cooler
An extraordinary silver wine cooler from the first White House, bearing direct provenance to George Washington's personal household effects. This piece represents the refined domestic life of the nation's first president and is among the rarest surviving objects from the Washington presidency.
Charles Wilson Peale Portrait of Washington
A portrait of George Washington by Charles Wilson Peale, one of the foremost American portraitists of the 18th century. Peale painted Washington from life on multiple occasions, and his works are considered among the most historically accurate likenesses of the first president.
Rembrandt Peale "Porthole" Portrait of Washington
The celebrated "Porthole" portrait by Rembrandt Peale, son of Charles Wilson Peale, is one of the most admired likenesses of Washington ever painted. Framed within a painted oval trompe-l'oeil stone window, this iconic format became the definitive image of Washington for generations of Americans.
Abraham Lincoln White House China & Glassware
Exceptionally rare pieces from the Lincoln White House service, including a presidential wine glass from the crystal service (ca. 1861) and a plate from the Limoges dinner service commissioned for the Lincoln administration. These are among the scarcest surviving objects from Lincoln's presidency.
Emanuel Leutze Historical Paintings
Works by Emanuel Leutze, the German-American painter celebrated for Washington Crossing the Delaware. Gary handled Leutze's painting of The Return of Columbus in Chains to Spain (1842), a monumental canvas that demonstrates the artist's mastery of historical narrative on a grand scale.
Tecumseh's War Club
The personal war club of the great Shawnee leader Tecumseh, who forged the most powerful Native American confederacy in history. Accompanied by documentation from General Isaac Brock, this weapon is one of the most significant Native American artifacts to have been offered on the private market.
1876 Gatling Gun — Custer Model
An 1876 Colt Gatling gun of the model that General Custer famously declined to bring to the Little Bighorn. Gary has handled multiple Gatling guns including the 1876 Custer model, an 1883 Colt Gatling gun, and an 1871 model — representing the apex of 19th-century rapid-fire military technology.
